GPO Handset Cords

We developed our cords because we found it impossible to find the right quality of replacements for our own restoration work. Most original cords are now in a pretty poor state and have degenerated both aesthetically and electrically to a point where they are no longer serviceable. Our cords are designed to fit British telephones, but because we make every cord by hand a large degree of customisation is possible.

what makes our cords so good?

Flexibility: The flexibility of original cords was achieved using a tinsel wire and a cotton insulator. Our cords also use a tinsel core with a very soft and flexible polymer coating which ensures a high level of electrical insulation exceeding that of the original cords. This is not an 'off the shelf' wire and is manufactured specifically and exclusively for us.

Size: The cores are manufactured to tight tolerances to accurately reproduce the diameter of an original cord. All cores have strain relief fibres running through them to give a high tensile strength. Our cords are all made to the original lengths but we can make a custom length if required.

Finish: The cores are braided with custom dyed pure Egyptian cotton supplied by a top UK manufacturer. The finish is matt and soft to the touch.

Colour: Our cords are available in Brown, Ivory, Red and Green cotton. The same cotton is used for all sections of cord to ensure a match.

Anchor: Importantly, these cords use the same securing methods as the original cords. Loops are used for handsets and colour matched cotton ties for other fixings.

Termination: The ring terminals match the size of machine screw used. Hence, they are covered by the screw head to retain the original appearance. If you would prefer a different termination, please contact us to discuss other options available.

Our cords are designed to fit British telephones, but because we make every cord by hand a large degree of customisation is possible. If you are not sure which cord you require for your telephone, please use the ‘Contact Us’ and we will be happy to advise.
